No. 12 Lewis Baseball's Bats Go Silent In 12-0, 6-4 Sweep By Saint Joseph’s

The Flyers take on the Pumas for a second twinbill on Sunday at 12 PM

Rensselear, Ind. – The No. 12 Lewis University baseball team's bats fell silent as the Flyers dropped a Saturday (April 27) Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to Saint Joseph's 12-0, 6-4 at Gil Hodges Field.
 
The Flyers fall to 26-9 on the season and 20-7 in GLVC action while the Pumas improve to 24-13 on the year and 19-9 against conference opponents.
 
In the first game, Saint Joseph's Kolin Conner led the offensive charge going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in the third inning where the Puma's picked up six runs. The Pumas put two runs on the board in the first inning, a single run in the fourth and three in the fifth for the 12-0 victory. Six of Saint Joseph's 12 hits were for extra bases, including three home runs.
 
The Flyers only had five batters reach base in the first game. Senior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./Triton) and junior Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) reached base via singles. Juniors Alex Slaby (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West) (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West/Blackhawk College), Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North/Moraine Valley C.C.) and Albano drew walks off the Puma's pitcher Jordan Peterson.
 
Peterson (7-1) picked up the victory, as he gave up two hits and walked three in seven innings of work.
 
The Flyers' freshman starting pitcher Nick Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) took the loss in two innings of work. Davito (1-1) gave up seven runs on seven hits and only walked one.
 
The Flyers were able to regroup for the second game, jumping onto the scoreboard in the first inning. Albano hit a RBI-single to score sophomore Kane Lombardo (Forest Park, Ill./Nazareth) (Forest Park, Ill./Nazareth) who led off the game with a walk.
 
Saint Joseph's answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame on three singles that found holes in the Flyers defense. The Pumas added two runs in the second inning as back-to-back batters drew walks before being hit in by SJC's Conner, for a 5-1 lead.
 
The Flyers cut the Pumas' lead to one in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Lombardo drew his second walk of the game to get on base and advanced to second on a ground out by junior Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) and to third on a bunt single by Murray. Albano singled to the shortstop to score Lombardo for the Flyers first run of the frame.
 
After junior Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) drew a walk to load the bases, senior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medina, Ill./Lake Park) hit a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Murray and Albano.
 
The Pumas added a single run in the bottom of the third to extend their lead back to two runs, 6-4, on a solo home run by Garrett O'Neil.
 
Schroeder (4-3) took the game two loss for the Flyers, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings of work. He also struck out five and walked four. Sophomore Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) pitched a clean inning in relief, striking out one.
 
Saint Joseph's Brian Bayliss Jr. (5-1) picked up the win, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out eight in seven innings of work.
 
The Flyers and Pumas return to Gil Hodges Field for a Sunday doubleheader with first pitch at 12 PM.
