Lewis Softball Blanks Ashland, 5-0, In NCAA Midwest Regional Opener

Flyers to face No. 1 Indianapolis/Wayne State winner at 10 AM ET on Saturday.

Lewis University sophomore pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) twirled a complete-game, two-hit shutout to lift the Flyers to the 5-0 victory over Ashland in a 2013 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional 1 Softball Tournament showdown at the University of Indianapolis' Baumgartner Field on Friday (May 10) afternoon.

Bowler (18-8) struck out two batters in seven innings and did not allow an Ashland runner to reach second base. The shutout is Bowler's ninth of the season.

"This was a great start for our team," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "It was an absolute pitching gem by Kelly (Bowler) today.."

With the win, Lewis improves to 31-16 and will meet the winner of Friday's No. 1 Indianapolis/Wayne State showdown at 10 AM ET on Saturday (May 10) afternoon. Ashland is now 27-19 and takes on the loser of the Greyhounds and Warriors meeting at 12:30 PM ET on Saturday.

Lewis senior center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) was the table-setter for the Flyers on Friday, as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Senior right fielder Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, while freshman catcher Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown) had two hits and scored a run for the Flyers.

Lewis junior third baseman Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) provided the knockout blow for the Flyers, as she delivered a two-run home run off of Ashland relief pitcher Sarah Alley in the fourth inning. Four of the Flyers' eight hits went for extra bases.

Ashland starting pitcher Amber McDermott (11-6) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three runs and five hits in three innings of work.
