No. 8 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Pacific, 3-0

The Flyers out-blocked the Tigers 15.5 to 3.0.

Stockton, Calif. – The No. 8 Lewis men's volleyball team grounded out a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-20) victory over the University of the Pacific on Saturday (Jan. 11) at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
 
The Flyers improve to 2-2 on the campaign while the Tigers fall to 1-2 on the year.
 
The Flyers were led by sophomore middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel), who hit .312 collecting seven kills and two errors on 16 attempts while picking up three digs, a season-high three solo blocks and five block assists. Fellow middle blocker redshirt freshman Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) tallied six kills and one error on 10 attempts to swing .400 and four block assists.
 
"Bob and Jacob did a good job anchoring our offense and defense," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "Tonight's win was a good team response to my challenge to bring more effort in all facets of their game."
 
Redshirt junior outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) had seven kills, seven digs and three block assists while junior opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) chipped in six kills, seven digs and five block assists for the Flyers. Redshirt senior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) tallied 24 assists, two solo blocks, and two block assists as junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) had seven digs.
 
The Flyers posted a season-high 15.5 total blocks tallying five solo blocks and 21 block assists while holding the Tigers to 3.0 total blocks. Defensively, Lewis didn't allow a Pacific service ace, bouncing back after allowing a season high 14 the night before against Stanford.
 
Lewis was in control of the match, despite finishing with a .168 hitting percentage, collecting 30 kills and 14 errors on 95 attempts. The Flyers held the Tigers to swing .093 with 40 kills and 30 errors on 107 total attempts.
 
Pacific's offense was led by Christian Francschi's 11 kills and 10 digs while Marty Ross chipped in 10 putaways. The Tigers' setter Marco Grasso dished out a floor-high 32 assists, while libero Javier Caceres collected 15 digs.
 
The Flyers return to Neil Carey Arena to host Mount Olive on Friday (Jan. 17), which will also be autograph night. First serve is set for 7 PM.
