No. 10 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Gets Past No. 3 BYU, 3-1

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 10 Lewis University men's volleyball hit .727 (18 K, 2 E, 22 TA) in the third set to defeat No. 3 Brigham Young University 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23) on Saturday (Jan. 4) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers improve to 1-1 on the season while the Cougars fall to 0-2 on the campaign.
 
"We grinded out points the entire match tonight," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "The group cleaned up some errors we made the other day and put ourselves in position to score points."
 
"Tonight was a good step forward from where we were a couple of days ago."
 
The Lewis offense was led by junior outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) swinging .370, collecting 16 kills with six errors on 27 attempts. Petty also collected five digs and two total blocks. Redshirt junior outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) tallied 15 kills and five block assists while junior opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) chipped in 13 putaways and four block assists.
 
Flyer redshirt senior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) dished out a floor-high 47 assists and eight digs while junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) collected 10 digs and five assists.
 
Lewis out-blocked BYU, 12-10, led by six block assists from the Flyers' sophomore middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel). He also chipped in seven kills in the contest.
 
The Flyers worked together to hit .350 (56 K, 20 E, 103 TA) while holding them to only swing .210 (43 K, 21 E, 105 TA).
 
After the Flyers finished the first set strong to win 25-22 on a kill by Walsh, the Cougars came back in the second set, as the Flyers committed 12 errors to knot the match up at 1-all.
 
In the third set, the Flyers picked up block assists from Walsh and Fitterer to go up by four at 19-15. BYU picked up back-to-back kills from Kiril Meretev to get within two at 19-17, but the Flyers snuffed out BYU's rally with two kills from Powell,three putaways from Petty and a Cougar error for the set win, 25-21.
 
The squads exchanged 10 ties in the fourth set, with the last at 23-all on a kill from Powell. The Flyers collected a BYU attack error and monster block assists from Boldog and Walsh for the set and match win.
 
BYU was led by Taylor Sander's 15 kills, four service aces, and two block assists while the Cougars' setter Tyler Heap dished out 33 assists.
 
The Flyers are back in action at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (Jan. 5) when they host No. 11 USC at 7 PM.
