St. Charles, Mo. – The No. 12 Lewis University men's volleyball team had three Flyers hit over .625 on Saturday (March 1) which helped the squad collect a 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-19) sweep of Lindenwood in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play at Hyland Arena.
The Flyers, who hit .532 (48 K, 6 E, 79 TA) for the night, improve to 12-4 on the season and 4-2 in MIVA play while the Lions fall to 12-6 on the year and 3-5 in league action.
The Lewis offense was led by redshirt junior outside hitter
Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) who tallied 18 kills with no errors in 28 attempts to swing .643. Fellow outside hitter
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) racked up 16 putaways and two errors on 20 attempts to hit a blistering .700.
Sophomore middle blocker
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) posted a .625 hitting percentage, with 10 kills and no errors on 16 attempts for the Flyers. He also tallied five digs and three block assists. Senior setter
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) tallied a three set season-high 44 assists and two block assists while junior libero
Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) picked up eight digs.
"We had a good offensive grove tonight going with Geoff, Greg and Bobby," Lewis head men's volleyball coach
Dan Friend said. "They are carrying a big offensive load for us right now.
"We also had a solid defensive night with very few misses which allowed us to keep the pressure on Lindenwood."
Lewis came out hot, swinging at a .400 (11 K, 3 E, 20 TA) clip while holding the Lions to a -.077 (5 K, 7 E, 26 TA) hitting percentage. Petty, Powell and Walsh all collected three putaways in the opening set.
In the second set, the Lions got within two points at 21-19 on a Michael Adams kill that forced a Flyer time out. Powell tallied three putaways as Petty picked up a kill to spur the Flyers to take the set on a 4-2 run.
The Flyers broke away from a 9-all tie in the third set on a block assist by Walsh and Powell. Lewis quickly tallied kills from Powell and Petty to go up 12-9. The Lions, who steadily cut at the Flyers lead, got a kill from Colin Hackworth to get back within one at 18-17, but Lewis went on a 6-2 run to close out the set and the match.
The Lions, who hit .274 (36 K, 13 E, 84 TA) as a team, were led by Adam's 12 kills, while Zach Bequette and Hackworth both chipped in six putaways. Lindenwood setter Tim Schmidt dished out 31 assists and five digs.
The Flyers have a 10-day break before they are back in action at Neil Carey Arena on Tuesday (March 11) when they host Ohio State. First serve on Black Out Night is set for 7 PM.
