Kirksville, Mo. - The Great Lakes Valley Conference season started off on a rough note for the Lewis University softball team, as the Flyers were swept by Truman State, 7-0 and 4-1, at the Truman Softball Park on Saturday (March 15) afternoon.
In all, the Flyers managed just eight hits for the entire afternoon. Lewis senior third baseman
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) accounted for three of the Flyers' eight hits, including a double.
"It's the same old story," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "Our bats were silenced by our opponent's pitching. Hopefully we can get all facets, specifically our hitting, fielding and pitching, to be playing at our highest level against Quincy on Monday."
With the sweep, Truman State improves to 16-3 on the campaign and 9-0 in conference action, while the visiting Flyers fall to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in GLVC play.
In the opener, Truman State was keyed offensively by junior second baseman Andrea Klipsch. Klipsch hit a two-run homer and scored two runs for the Bulldogs. TSU third baseman Cate Simon was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Bulldogs pitcher Kindra Heinze (9-1) was the victor in Game One, allowing just three hits and striking out seven batters in seven innings. Lewis junior starter
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) took the loss in the circle for the Flyers. Bowler (2-3) surrendered four runs, three earned, and six hits in five innings of work, while striking out five.
In the nightcap, Truman State broke a scoreless tie with four unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings. TSU first baseman Liz Leath went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the Bulldogs, while outfielders Danielle Lewellen and Kelsey Bollman (run) both collected two hits in the victory.
Lewis freshman
Chase Machain (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) took the loss for the Flyers. Machain (1-4) allowed four runs, three earned, and 10 hits in 4.1 innings. TSU starting pitcher Kelsea Dorsey (7-2) earned the complete-game victory for the Bulldogs, allowing one run and five hits, while fanning four Flyers.
Lewis returns to action on Monday (March 17), as the Flyers continue their road trip to Quincy for a 2 PM doubleheader.
