Indianapolis, Ind. - The University of Indianapolis set the tone early and never looked back, as the Greyhounds scored 10 runs in the first inning of Saturday's opener en route to the 12-0 (5 inn.), 6-0 (6 inn.) Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of the Lewis University softball team at Baumgartner Field. Game two was called due to darkness.
"Under these brutally cold conditions, I thought Indianapolis handled it much better than our players did," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "Pitching is the most important piece of the success puzzle, and we're just not getting quality innings from our staff."
With the sweep, Indianapolis improves to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while the Flyers fall to 9-14 on the campaign and 3-7 in GLVC action.
In game one, UIndy sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and touched Lewis starting pitcher
Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) for 10 earned runs, including a grand slam by junior designated player Taylor Russell. Schweickert (3-3) allowed 10 runs on four hits and six walks in three innings with one strikeout. Russell was one of three Greyhounds with at least two RBI, while seven different players plated at least one run.
The nightcap was scoreless through three and a half innings, before UIndy got to Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport). UIndy scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Erika Goodwin (4-for-4). Bowler (5-5) allowed six runs - four earned - and eight hits and five walks in five innings of work. UIndy starting pitcher Morgan Foley (10-4) surrendered five hits and struck out four to earn the complete-game victory.
Lewis outfielder
Chase Machain (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) was the lone offensive highlight for the Flyers, as she accounted for three of the Flyers' eight hits on the afternoon.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (March 30), as the Flyers head to Rensselaer, Ind., to square off with Saint Joseph's for a 12 PM doubleheader.
