Rensselaer, Ind. -
Saint Joseph's tallied 10 RBI with two outs as the host Pumas collected the 7-1, 8-0 (5 inn.) Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of the Lewis University softball team at Puma Field on Sunday (March 30) afternoon.

"Saint Joe's played perfect softball in both games," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "They had clutch hits with runners in scoring position, outstanding defense, strong pitching and a well orchestrated game plan to jump out to an early lead in both games.

"For us to score one run in four games (this weekend) is a difficult obstacle to overcome."

Saint Joseph's sophomore second baseman Kylie Hirchak was Lewis' tormentor on offense, as she went 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored for the Pumas. All three of her hits came with two outs. SJC junior outfielder Tiffany Gibson and freshman designated player Ashley Whitaker each added three RBI for the Pumas.

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 10-12 on the campaign and 7-5 in GLVC action, while the visiting Flyers fall to 9-16 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Hirchak and Gibson accounted for four of Saint Joseph's seven RBI in game one,  while three different players notched at least two hits in the opener. The Pumas touched Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) for four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Hirchak.

Bowler (5-6) allowed seven runs (4 earned), nine hits and two walks in four innings pitched. Saint Joseph's starting pitcher Jessica Cates improved to 5-2 on the campaign, allowing just one hit in four innings pitched.

Lewis freshman outfielder Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) notched two of the Flyers' three hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Pumas jumped on starter Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) for three runs in the first and never looked back. Hirchak (4 RBI) and Whitaker (2-run homer) combined for six of Saint Joseph's eight RBI. Brems (0-2) allowed eight runs and eight hits in four innings pitched with four strikeouts. Her counterpart Megan Schwartzengraber (3-7) limited the Flyers to four hits and struck out one batter in five innings of work.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (April 5), as the Flyers welcome Southern Indiana for a 12 PM doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field.
