No. 11 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Defeats Lindenwood, 3-1

Greg Petty and Geoff Powell both tallied 15 kills, while James Hofmann collected six total blocks.

The Flyers outblocked the Lions 12.5 to 5.5.

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 11 Lewis University men's volleyball team extended their winning streak to four matches on Saturday (April 5) with a 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Lindenwood at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers improve to 19-6 on the year and 9-3 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play while the Lions fall to 19-9 on the season and 4-8 in the league.
 
"We came out sluggish and Lindenwood put some tough serving pressure on us," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "As the evening progressed the guys were able to clean up some areas and took better care of the ball."
 
Lewis redshirt junior outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) collected his third double-double of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) had eight kills and four block assists. Redshirt junior middle blocker James Hofmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) came off the bench to get six total blocks as junior outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) picked up 15 putaways.  Junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) had eight digs while redshirt senior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had 41 assists.
 
The Flyers were able to break a 15-all tie in the first set to go up 17-15 on a kill by Powell and a Lindenwood miscue. Lewis used the cushion to close out the set on an 8-4 run. Powell and Petty both had three kills in the set.
 
Lindenwood turned the tables on Lewis to win the second set, hitting .464 with 14 kills and one error on 28 attempts while holding the Flyers to a .250 clip (13 K, 6 E, 28 TA).
 
The Flyers regained the momentum in the third set as they picked up five team blocks, including three block assists by Hofmann. Lewis hit .429 in the game with 13 kills and four errors in 21 attempts, as Powell and Petty picked up four kills while Walsh tallied three putaways.
 
Lewis heated up in fourth set, swinging at a .632 clip with 14 kills and two errors in 19 attempts while holding Lindenwood to a .000 (8 K, 8 E, 27 TA) hitting percentage. The Flyers also added four blocks in the set, as they finished with a 12.5-5.5 team blocking advantage over the Lions.
 
The Lions were led by Kyle Overby's 13 kills while Colin Hackworth chipped in 11 putaways. Lindenwood setter Tim Schmidt had 39 assists while Michael Adams had seven kills and seven digs.
 
The Flyers return to action on Friday (April 11) when they host Grand Canyon for the first of two matches at Neil Carey Arena. First serve is set for 7 PM.
