Romeoville, Ill. - A late-inning rally, culminating with a walk-off error helped the Lewis University softball team salvage the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader split with a 4-3 (8 inn.) win over Southern Indiana in game two of their twinbill at the Lewis Softball Field on Saturday (Apr. 5) afternoon. The Screaming Eagles won the opening game, 9-3.
With the split, Lewis is now 10-17 on the campaign and 4-10 in conference action, while the visiting Screaming Eagles are 17-12 overall and 9-11 in GLVC play.
Trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning of the nightcap, Lewis picked up a pair of runs on a RBI single by junior pitcher
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) and a bases loaded wild pitch by USI reliever Brooke Harmening (11-5). The Flyers evened up the score at 3-apiece in the seventh on a RBI double by freshman right fielder
Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook). Knaak was 2-for-3 with a RBI and scored a run in game two.
The Flyers completed the rally in the eighth, as Brems reached base on a fielding error by USI first baseman Kelsey Jankowski. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North). Lewis senior third baseman
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) sent a grounder to her counterpart Alison Nord at third.
Nord's throw, however, sailed past Jankowski, allowing Brems (2-for-4, RBI, run) to score the winning run from second base.
Brems (1-2) earned the complete-game victory, allowing three runs and four hits in eight innings of work while striking out five batters. Harmening gave up two runs, one earned, and two hits in 2.2 innings of work.
"I thought Ali pitched marvelously," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We had some great defense and clutch hitting and that's what it takes to win in this league.
"We feel very good about ourselves after that comeback."
In the opener, Southern Indiana broke open a 3-all tie with six unanswered runs on their way to the victory. Jankowski (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and junior second baseman MacKenzi Dorsam (4-for-4, 4 RBI, run) combined to go 7-for-8 with six RBI and a run to lead the Screaming Eagles.
After allowing three runs and three hits in the first, Harmening buckled down and allowed two base knocks the rest of the way. She allowed three runs - one earned - and five hits, while striking out eight batters. Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) took the loss. Bowler (5-7) allowed six runs and 11 hits in six innings of work.
Brems led the Flyers offensively as she hit a two-run double and scored a run in the opener.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday (Apr. 6), as they welcome Bellarmine to the Lewis Softball Field for a 10 AM twinbill.
