Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team ran into the Bellarmine buzzsaw of junior catcher Scarlett Powers and sophomore pitcher Ally Foster, as the visiting Knights earned the 3-2 (8 inn.), 11-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over the Flyers at the Lewis Softball Field on Sunday (Apr. 6) afternoon.
Powers had two home runs, including the game winning blast in the eighth inning of the opener. In the nightcap, Powers went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and finished with five RBI. Foster (12-3), who came on in relief in both contests, allowed no runs, three hits and fanned 12 Flyer batters. She was equally as impressive at the plate, as she went 3-for-7 with four runs, including a solo home run in game two.
"The Bellarmine superstars (Powers and Foster) hurt us the most today," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We knocked their starting pitcher out in both games today, but when (Foster) came in, we couldn't touch her."
With the sweep, Bellarmine improves to 27-9 overall and 20-4 in GLVC action, while the host Flyers fall to 10-19 on the campaign and 4-12 in conference play.
Trailing 1-0 in the first inning of the opener, Lewis answered with a pair of RBI singles by senior third baseman
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) and junior first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) to push the Flyers ahead, 2-1.
Bellarmine evened up the score in the fifth inning on a RBI fielders choice by junior Erin Sireno. The score would remain that way until the eighth inning, as Powers took an offering from Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) over the center field wall for the game-winning blast.
Bowler (5-8) allowed three runs and five hits in eight innings of work, while walking and striking out five batters. Foster allowed just one hit and struck out nine batters to earn the win for the Knights.
In the nightcap, the Knights jumped on Lewis starting pitcher
Chase Machain (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) immediately, as Foster and freshman shortstop Erica Knollman opened the game with back-to-back solo home runs.
The Flyers responded with a three-run second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from freshman second baseman
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), a bases loaded walk issued to sophomore catcher
Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) and a RBI fielders choice by sophomore pinch hitter
Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown) to give Lewis the 3-2 advantage.
That lead would be short lived, as Powers connected for a three-run homer in the fourth to give Bellarmine a 5-3 advantage that they would not relinquish.
Machain (1-6) took the loss for the Flyers, allowing five runs and five hits in three innings, while striking out three batters. Foster allowed just two hits in 5.2 innings and struck out three.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday (Apr. 12), as they welcome Rockhurst to the Lewis Softball Field for a 12 PM doubleheader.
