Liberty, Mo. - The Lewis University softball team was held scoreless for 13 out of a possible 14 innings, but used a four-run fifth in the nightcap to salvage the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader spilt against Rockhurst University (L, 1-0; W, 4-1) at William Jewell's Softball Field on Sunday (April 19) afternoon.
"Our pitching kept us in both ball games today," Lewis head softball coach
Becky Pearl said. "Unfortunately, in game one we couldn't string anything together, like we were able to in the fifth inning of the second game.
"Losing the opener was tough, but I was proud of the way we were able to bounce back."
With the split, Lewis is now 21-18 overall and 11-11 in conference action, while Rockhurst is now 23-17 on the campaign and 13-11 in GLVC play.
In the opener, Lewis senior pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) allowed just one run and three hits in six innings of work, but came out on the short end of the decision. Bowler (13-10) struck out three Rockhurt batters. Her counterpart Bridgette Sappington earned the complete-game, three-hit shutout while fanning three Flyers.
Rockhurst scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI groundout by Demi Plathe.
The second game was nearly identical to the opener, as the contest was scoreless through four complete innings.
Lewis changed all of that as they touched Sappington, who came on in relief, for four runs in the fifth inning. Lewis senior first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) provided the crucial blow with a two-run single. Lewis sophomore shorstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) also recorded a RBI single during that frame and went 2-for-4 with a double in the nightcap.
Lewis starting pitcher
Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) earned the complete-game victory for the Flyers, as she allowed one run and five hits. Schweickert (8-8) fanned seven Rockhurst batters. Sappington (18-9) took the loss for the Hawks, surrendering four runs - three earned - and seven hits, while striking out four batters.
Lewis is back in action on Monday (April 20), as the Flyers return to William Jewell for a 12 PM twinbill against the host Cardinals.
