Notre Dame, Ind. - Led by a 15th-place mark from redshirt sophomore
Asher Scott (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider), the Lewis University men's cross country team turned in a fifth-place team finish in the College Division of the 36th annual five-mile National Catholic Championships, hosted by Notre Dame at the Burke Golf Course.
Loras won the 23-team event with 39 points, followed by Bellarmine (76), Walsh (79), Aquinas (103) and Lewis (141).
"The men really ran an intelligent, smart race today," Lewis head men's cross country coach
James Kearney said. "They really worked through the entire 5-mile race well.
"I'm very pleased with our race and I think as we continue to progress, we should really put together a very positive post season."
Scott crossed the finish line in 26:20 to lead the Flyer pack, followed by senior
Matt Jemilo (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park), who was 24th with a mark of 26:47.9. Jemilo's classmate
James Weissensel (Sandwich, Ill./Marquette Academy) finished right behind him with a 25th-place showing of 26:51.1. Flyer freshman
Jackson Waters (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) placed 38th (27:10.9), while redshirt sophomore
Fabiel Urzua (Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) rounded out the scoring for Lewis with a 39th-place finish (27:12.1).
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 19), as they head to Warrenville, Ill., to participate in the Gil Dodds Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College. The race is slated to begin at 10:45 AM.
