Patrick Lilly (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) had a match-high 10 kills in No. 14 Lewis men's volleyball's 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 30-28) victory over Princeton on Wednesday (March 16) at Neil Carey Arena.
All of Lilly's 10 kills came in the third set. Princeton rallied from a 24-20 deficit to earn set points at 25-24 and 26-25. The Flyers denied both, the first on a kill by Lilly off the block. He then had kills for points 29 and 30 to win the match.
Lilly was one of 12 Flyers with a kill in the contest. Before set three, it was his teammates doing the damage. Freshman
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) had seven kills and an ace. Junior
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) finished with five kills on nine swings with no errors. He also had two blocks.
The Flyers went up 1-0 with a comeback win in set one. A late 5-1 run put the Flyers up 21-18. Freshman
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) had a kill on set point, one of five putdowns in the match.
As a team, Lewis out-hit the Tigers .320 to .250. Lewis held a 33-27 advantage in digs with freshman
Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) recording a match-high 10.
"Simmons did a nice job at the libero spot for us," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. "He was really steady for us and did some nice things."
Princeton falls to 3-12. Lewis improves to 12-10.
"We were trying to see some different looks," Friend said. "Everybody got in some good game reps. It was a good win."
The Flyers return to conference play on Friday (March 18) in a 7 p.m. start with Quincy at Neil Carey Arena.
