Becky Pearl announced on Tuesday (Dec. 11) that Carrie Anderson, Meghan Bontrager, Katie David, Anna Gustafson, Maggie Joutras and Lanie Malone will join the Flyers for the 2020 season.
"We're excited to welcome these six young women to Lewis and our softball family," Pearl said. "This is a strong and versatile class that has a bright future ahead of them. This group also provides us depth offensively, defensively and in the circle."
Anderson, a 5-4, shortstop/outfielder from Roscoe, Ill., hit .494 with 11 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 32 RBI during her junior year at Hononegah Community High School. She helped lead her team to a 22-12 record and a conference championship. Anderson was a NIC-10 First Team All-Conference selection and was the team's MVP. She has earned three varsity letters in softball and one in basketball. Anderson plans on majoring in biology at Lewis.
Bontrager, a 5-5, outfielder from Middlebury, Ind. hit .418 last season with an on-base percentage of .458, a slugging percentage of .507 and had a fielding percentage of .980 with 34 putouts at Northridge High School. She helped lead her team to a 15-5 record and a Northern Lakes Conference championship. Bontrager was a First Team All-NLC selection last year and was an honorable mention All-NLC selection in 2017. She's earned three letters in softball and two in basketball. She plans on majoring in sport management at Lewis.
David, a 5-8, pitcher/first basemen from Mapleton, Ill., was a First Team All-Region selection at Illinois Central College in 2018 after hitting .429 with 17 doubles, 11 home runs, 44 runs scored and 52 RBI with a slugging percentage of .763. She also went 16-7 with a 2.62 earned run average in 28 appearances with 11 starts and tossed eight complete games. David struck out 136 batters in 149.2 innings pitched. David helped lead her team to a 37-11 record, a second place finish in NJCAA Division II Region 24 and qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. She helped lead Illini Bluffs High School to back-to-back regional championships in 2016 and 2017 and was a two-time First Team All-Area selection. David plans on majoring in nursing at Lewis.
Gustafson, a 5-6, pitcher/outfielder from Elkhart, Ind., is a three-year letterwinner at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind., has helped lead her team to the Indiana High School Athletics Association Final Four three straight years and a second place finish in Class 4A in 2016. Last season, she hit .308 with five home runs and had an ERA of 1.70. Gustafson has helped lead her team to a record 74-13 over the past three seasons. She was a First Team All-Conference pitcher in 2018. Gustafson plans on majoring in biology with an emphasis in pre-dentistry at Lewis.
Joutras, a 5-3, second baseman/outfielder from Shorewood, Ill., is a two-year varsity letterwinner at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Ill. She helped lead the Celtics to a 29-12 record in 2018 and a third place finish in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 3A. Over the past two years Joutras has helped lead Providence Catholic to a record of 52-24 and back-to-back regional championships. She plans in majoring in nursing at Lewis.
Malone, a 5-5, infielder/outfielder from Manteno, Ill., was an All-Area, All-Conference and All-State selection in 2018. She helped lead the Panthers to a 25-6, 15-1 Interstate Eight Conference and a sectional semifinal appearance in IHSA Class 3A. Malone is undecided on a major.
Lewis opens its 2019 season on February 22nd at the Division II Midwest Region Dome Invitational at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill. The Flyers will take on both Ashland (9 a.m.) and Wisconsin-Parkside (11 a.m.).
