No. 3 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Hosts No. 13 McKendree This Friday

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's third ranked men's volleyball team continues its five-match homestand hosting 13th ranked McKendree this Friday at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers enter Friday's contest with a record of 8-1, 3-1 MIVA and is third in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) standings while the Bearcats are 7-0 overall and 6-0 MIVA and first in the conference standings.

Lewis opened its five-match homestand with back-to-back wins over Purdue Fort Wayne last weekend. The Flyers defeated the Mastodons in four sets last Friday behind 19 kills from Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) and completed the weekend sweep rallying from a 2-0 deficit to win the match in five sets on Saturday. Coenen had 21 kills in the contest while Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) added 15 kills and 13 digs in the contest and Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) finished with 14 kills.

With his 40 kills in the two matches last weekend Coenen moved into second all-time in school history in the rally scoring era with 1,433 kills and is fourth all-time in school history overall. He's also second in the rally scoring era in kills per set with 3.55 and total attacks with 3,133. He is also third all-time in the rally scoring era with 135 service aces and sixth in the rally scoring era with 554 digs.

Coenen leads the MIVA in kills with 138 and is third in the conference with 4.06 kills per set. Mitchem leads the conference with a .519 hitting percentage and is second in blocks per set with 1.32 while TJ Murray (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) is third with 1.29 blocks per set. Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) is third in the league in assists per set with 10.32.

McKendree is tied with Ball State for the longest winning streak in the MIVA this season as both teams have currently won seven straight matches. The Bearcats remained perfect defeating Quincy 3-1 and 3-0 last week in Lebanon, Ill. McKendree has dropped only three sets this season.

The Bearcats are averaging nearly 12 kills per set, 11.04 assists per set, 8.88 digs per set and 2.77 blocks per set this season.

Patrick Ross leads the team with 2.91 kills per set while Ethan Carroll is averaging 2.54 kills per set and Zach Schnittker is at 2.40 kills per set. Ryan Serrano runs the offense and is distributing 9.54 assists per set.

On the defensive side, Lucas Galifos leads the way on the front line with 1.38 blocks per set while Serrao is averaging 1.00 blocks per set. Francisco Comas is the leader on the backline averaging 2.21 digs per set and Serrano is averaging 1.92 digs per set.

Friday's contest is the 14th meeting all-time between the Flyers and McKendree with Lewis holding an 11-2 lead in the series. The Bearcats handed the Flyers their only loss in conference play in 2020 defeating Lewis in five sets in the conference opener for both teams at Neil Carey Arena.
