ROLLA, Mo. – Lewis University's women's track and field team won its fifth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship, sixth in seven years and 11th overall on Saturday (May 8) at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers won seven events on Saturday and had scoring performances in 11 events.
Lewis'
Allison Heinzer (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland HS) was named the GLVC Track Athlete of the Year. She also won the award at the 2018 GLVC Championships. Alecea Cardiillo was named the GLVC Co-Field Athlete of the Year along with Maryville's Casey Berberich and head coach
Dana Schwarting was named the GLVC Coach of the Year.
Kylie Wymer (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) was named the team's honoree for the GLVC's James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.
Jada Hoffman (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy) won the 100 meters with a time of 11.63 seconds breaking the conference meet record in the event while
Rose-Marie Ogbuli (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) finished fifth in a time of 11.98 seconds.
Heinzer picked up the first of her two individual event wins in the 200 meters finishing with a time of 23.89 seconds. Hoffman and
Grace Harris (Dousman, Wis./Homeschooled) finished second and third in the race with times of 24.32 and 24.39 seconds respectively. All three times were good for NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Heinzer and Harris took the top two spots in the 400 meters with Heinzer winning the race in a time of 54.77 seconds while Harris finished at 54.83 seconds. Both times were also provisional qualifying times.
Kassaday Learn took fourth in the 1500 with a time of 4:42.57 and also finished fourth in the 5000 meters finishing in a time of 17:40.56. Learn was joined in the 5000 by
Stephanie Jarvis (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) who finished sixth with a time of 17:46.97.
Natasha Bernett (McAlpin, Ill./Lane Tech) picked up the first of her two event wins on Saturday in the 100 hurdles winning in a time of 13.85 seconds and improving her provisional qualifying time.
Allison Mack (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park HS) took fifth in the event with a time of 14.44 seconds.
Bernett came back near the end of the meet and won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.49 while Mack finished sixth at 1:06.15 and
Essence Winters (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) came in eighth at 1:10.91.
The Flyer 4x400 meter relay quartet of Heinzer, Harris,
Tsitsi Mahachi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) and
Kyla Chalmers (Elk Grove Village, Ill./James B. Conant) won the event in a time of 3:45.32 which also was a provisional qualifying time.
Jozlyn Garcia (Sterling, Ill./Sterling HS) finished sixth in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.60 meters (5'3").
Lewis took six of the top eight spots in the triple jump with Cardiillo winning the event with a leap of 12.57 meters (41'3"), Mahachi finished second at 12.45 meters (40'10.25"),
Anna Laudizio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) took fourth with a jump of 12.22 meters (40'1.25"),
Jaden Christian (Braidwood, Ill./Braidwood (Reed-Custer)) finished fifth with a leap of 11.68 meters (38'4"),
Rachael Ramon (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was seventh at 11.46 meters (37'7.25") and
Tori Hagg (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community HS) finished eighth at 11.40 meters (37'5").
Alyssa Betlejeski (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet West) took fifth in the discus with a throw of 41.50 meters (136'2").
Bernett and
Aliza Van Den Elzen (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) finished second and third with heaves of 41.46 meters (136'0") and 41.11 meters (134'10") respectively.
Lewis returns to the track on Thursday (May 13) as they'll compete in North Central College's Dr. Keeler Invitational beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Naperville, Ill.
