van Leeuwen Finishes Third in 200 Free To Earn All-American Honors At NCAA Championships

His finish is tied for the highest finish in school history at the national level.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lewis University's Ruben van Leeuwen (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/CIU/Christelyk Lyceum Veenendaal) finished third in the 200 free on Thursday evening on the second day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. He broke his own school record in the event and his third place finish is tied for the highest in the history of the Flyer swimming program at the national level.

van Leeuwen was third after the first 50 yards with a time of 21.98. He dropped to fourth at the halfway point and was 0.01 seconds behind McKendree's Xander Skinner. Skinner widen the gap to 0.14 seconds heading into the final leg but van Leeuwen swam the final 50 in a time of 24.30 to pass Skinner and beat him by 0.18 seconds to earn the bronze trophy and All-America honors. He earned honorable mention All-America honors at the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

van Leeuwen's third place finish is tied with Kevin Coates who finished third in the 1650 free at the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for the best in school history.

Mariano Sosa (Olavarria, Argentina/) and Rhys Taylor (Nottingham, England/National C of E Academy) swam in the 400 individual medley with Sosa finishing 19th overall in a time of 3:56.68 while Taylor came in 26th at 4:00.55.

On Wednesday, van Leeuwen won his heat in the 50 free with a time of 20.01 seconds breaking his own school record of 20.25 seconds. He finished 21st overall in the event.

Sosa also swam on Wednesday in the prelims of 200 individual medley finishing 38th overall in a time of 1:51.15.

van Leeuwen and Taylor return to the pool on Friday. van Leeuwen swims in the prelims of the 500 free and Taylor will swim the second of his three events as he'll swim in the 100 breaststroke. The morning session begins at 9 a.m. (CST) with the evening session scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. (CST).
