Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Lewis University's softball team won its third straight game in Florida and eighth overall as it walked off Wayne State (Neb.) 5-4 in eight innings on Sunday morning at DiamondPlex in Winter Haven, Fla. The Flyers improve to 8-4 while the Wildcats fall to 2-12.
Lewis struck first with two runs in the home half of the first.
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) and
Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) walked back-to-back to start the game and both moved up on a passed ball.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) drove in both runs with a high chopper through the middle of the infield.
Wayne State came right back scoring three times in the second as Kim Vidlak doubled to center with the bases loaded to make it 3-2.
The Flyers knotted the score in the third as
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) beat out a ground ball to short which scored Joutras from third.
The Wildcats regained the lead in the fourth on Jenna Etmans two-out single up the middle scoring Alle Perea.
Lewis tied it again in the fifth as Serena hit a solo home to dead center leading off the inning.
Wayne State had two runners in scoring position with one out in the eighth but
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), pitching in relief of Serena, got out of the jam with a strikeout and pop out to short.
The Flyers loaded the bases with no one out in its half of the eighth and scored the winning run as
Emma Young (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to drive in
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) with the game-winning run.
Serena, Bontrager and Wuske all had two hits in the contest and Serena drove in three of the five runs. She got the start in the circle and pitched the first 5.1 innings allowing four runs on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Wuske went the final 2.2 allowing no runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts to pick up the win and improve to 4-1 on the season.
Lewis' second game of the day against Grand Valley State was canceled.
The Flyers return to the diamond on Monday (March 7) as they take on Upper Iowa at 1:30 p.m. (CST) and Walsh at 3:45 p.m. (CST) at the Auburndale Complex in Winter Haven, Fla.
