Box Score ATHERTON, Cal. - The No. 12 Lewis University men's volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of Menlo College Friday (Jan. 9). The Flyers dominated the first set 25-15 before edging the Oaks 25-23 in sets two and three.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Oguzhan Oguz (Bursa, Turkey/Ocean) had 14 kills (.314 attack %)Â and seven digs to lead the Flyers.
Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) had 11 kills (.318%) and seven digs, while
Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) put up 29 assists and Shawn Baggs tallied 2.5 blocks.
Keau Thompson had nine kills to pace the Oaks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis built a 7-4 advantage in the first set thanks to back-to-back attack errors. After the Oaks got back to within a point at 10-9, Lewis scored four straight points on kills from Haber and
Deyan Todorov (Sofia, Bulgaria/51st Secondary) and a pair of attacked errors.
Two more kills from Todorov and a service ace from
Tyler Walenga (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made it 17-10. With the score 19-13, the Flyers went tallied three straight points to pull away with a 22-13 advantage.
Menlo built an early 5-3 lead before Lewis scored five of the nixed six points to pull ahead 8-6. After an Oak point Lewis scored six straight points behind a pair of kills by Oguzhan to take a 14-7 lead.
The lead grew to as many as nine points at 18-9 before Menlo battled back and got to within a point at 23-22. A kill by
Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) made it set point, but Menlo answered back with a kill to get within one again. A Haber kill on an assist from Estrada finished off the set for the Flyers.
Neither team had more than a two-point lead in the third set until back-to-back attack errors from the Oaks gave Lewis a 15-12 advantage. The Oaks responded with five straight points to pull ahead 17-15. They built the lead to three points at 23-20 when Lewis battled back with the final five points of the match.
The comeback started with a kill from Todorov and that was followed by a pair of attack errors from the Oaks to even the score. Oguzhan took control of the match from there, earning the final two kills of the match on assists from Estrada.
GAME NOTES
- The win marks the third straight year the Flyers opened the season with a win.
- Estrada's 29 assists were the second most of his career (38 vs. Roosevelt on Jan. 14, 2025).
- Lewis had a .309 hitting percentage, while the Oaks had a .093.
- The .093 hitting percentage for the Oaks is the lowest hitting percentage for a Lewis opponent since Fort Valley State's .047 on March 8, 2025.
