St. Louis, Mo. – The Lewis University softball team continues to impress as the Flyers earned the 6-0, 7-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Maryville for their 13th win in their last 14 contests at the MU Softball Field on Sunday (Apr. 10) afternoon.
“We've got some experienced and talented players on this team,” Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. “They've played in some big games last year and it has certainly helped us this year.
“Early in the season we had to come from behind for some victories, but lately we've been able to get out in front early and hold on to the lead.”
With the sweep, Lewis is now 22-7 on the season and 11-1 in GLVC action, while the host Saints are now 10-24 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
In the opener, Lewis senior pitcher Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) tossed her sixth complete-game shutout of the season to improve her record to 10-1 on the season. Pickrum allowed three hits and struck out six batters for the victory.
The Flyers used the strength of a four-run second inning to secure the win in game one. Senior second baseman Kayla Smith (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored and junior catcher Mary Giancarlo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) added a pair of RBI to lead the Flyers offensively.
In game two, sophomore shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) provided all the offense that the Flyers would need with a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning. For the game, Vucsko was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
The Flyers also received a pair of hits from sophomore center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Giancarlo. Hefler scored two runs while Giancarlo crossed the plate once.
The winning pitcher for Lewis in the nightcap was freshman hurler Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean). Moseley went the distance, allowing one run and six hits, to improve her record to 4-4 on the campaign.
Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 13), as the Flyers battle UW-Parkside for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Kenosha, Wis.
