Somers, Wis. - The No. 21 Lewis University softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games as the Flyers claimed the 12-0 (5 inn.), 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over UW-Parkside at the Case Softball Complex on Wednesday (Apr. 13) evening.
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 24-7 on the season and 13-1 in conference play, while the host Rangers are now 9-23 on the campaign and 5-9 in GLVC action.
In the opener, 10 different Flyers recorded base hits and eight players had at least one RBI in the win. The Flyers received a pair of two-run home runs from all-time leader Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) and freshman Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport).
The Flyers also received a pair of hits from sophomore center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), designated player Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean), second baseman Kayla Smith (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) and junior catcher Mary Giancarlo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South).
Sophomore shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and sophomore right fielder Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) each collected a pair of RBI in the win.
Lewis senior pitcher Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) notched her seventh complete-game shutout of the season to improve her record to 11-1 on the season. She scattered four hits and struck out four batters in five innings of work in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Flyers proved they could play small ball, as the Flyers broke a 1-all tie in the top of the sixth inning. Junior third baseman Traci Freitag (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) opened up the frame with a double to right center.
Vucsko moved her over to third base on a sacrifice bunt and Freitag (2-for-4, 2 runs) would score the winning run on a RBI groundout from Harmon. Harmon recorded both of the Flyers RBI in the second game.
Lewis junior pitcher Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) earned the complete-game win for the Flyers to move her record to 8-2 on the season. Habel scattered five hits and struck out five batters in the victory.
"Historically, UW-Parkside has always been a tough opponent for us," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We always have to be ready to play them. Game one was an offensive explosion and game two was a struggle, but I thought Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) pitched a marvelous game, because she really battled."
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 16), as the Flyers welcome Kentucky Wesleyan for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
