Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 21 Lewis University softball team, led by senior Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) and sophomore Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist), pounded out four home runs and 26 hits on their way to the 7-2, 7-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan at the Lewis Softball Field on Monday (Apr. 18) afternoon.

Vucsko went 5-for-7 at the dish with a home run and six RBI with two runs scored, while Harmon took Kentucky Wesleyan deep twice with a solo home run in each contest.

"We hit the ball very well today," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "The ball was really jumping off the bat. I have to credit the entire team for making good contact."

With the sweep, Lewis (28-7, 17-1 GLVC) extends its winning streak to 14 games and they have won 19 of their last 20 contests. Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 13-22 overall and 6-14 in GLVC action. 

In the opener, nine different Flyers recorded base hits. Freshman designated player Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored to lead the Flyers at the dish.

Harmon, Vucsko, sophomore center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), senior second baseman Kayla Smith (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) and freshman left fielder Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) each recorded two hits. Smith provided the decisive blow with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lewis senior pitcher Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) improved her record to 13-1 on the season. Pickrum scattered two runs and seven hits, while striking out a season-high eight batters in the victory. 

In the nightcap, the top four batters for the Flyers went a combined 8-for-14 at the plate with six RBI and four runs scored. Hefler set the table for Lewis, as went 3-for-4 with three bunt singles and two runs scored, while Vucsko cleared the bases.

Vucsko went 3-for-4 with five RBI, including a three-run homer to pace the Flyer offensive attack. That was the most RBI by a Flyer player since Mallory Paine collected five RBI in a GLVC Tournament game against Southern Indiana on May 5, 2006.

Lewis junior pitcher Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) collected her second consecutive complete-game shutout in as many days to move her record to 10-2 on the season. Habel struck out three batters and allowed five hits in seven innings of work.

"We're pleased with where we're at in the conference," DiMatteo said. "Now we have to get ready for the big guns in Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine in the next few weeks."

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Apr. 22), as they welcome Indianapolis for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
