Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University softball team looked like world beaters in their opener against Missouri S&T on Saturday (Apr. 2) afternoon, as the Flyers pounded out nine runs and 11 hits while nearly pitching a perfect game in the 9-0 (5 inn.) win over the visiting Miners.
The roles, however, were reversed in game two, as Missouri S&T scored three runs in the seventh and held the Flyers to three base hits on their way to the 3-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.
With the split, Lewis is now 14-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference action, while the Miners are now 7-19 on the campaign and 3-7 in GLVC play.
In the opener, eight different Flyers recorded base hits and five different players scored at least one run and drove in one run.
Flyer sophomore Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill., Marist) led the offensive attack, as the Chicago native went 3-for-3 – including a pair of doubles - had four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman designated player Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind., Andrean) went 2-for-2, including a two-run homer, her first collegiate blast.
Vucsko, Moseley, Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard West) and Traci Freitag (Westmont, Ill., Hinsdale Central) all scored two runs in the opener.
Senior pitcher Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill., Oak Forest) recorded her third consecutive shutout, as she claimed the complete-game, one-hitter while fanning a pair of batters. Pickrum had a perfect game with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, before Missouri S&T center fielder Kate Runyan sent a ground ball through the left side for a single. Pickrum (6-1) has not allowed an earned run in her last 24.1 innings pitched.
Moseley (3-4) was the tough luck loser in game two, as she tossed six scoreless innings before surrendering three hits to open the seventh inning. Lewis junior Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South) was called upon in relief, and gave up a two-run double to Missouri S&T third baseman Maggie Schroeder to give the Miners a 2-0 advantage. Miner left fielder Katie Smith added an insurance run with a RBI single for Missouri S&T's third run of the frame.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (April 3), as the Flyers welcome Drury for a 10 AM twinbill at the Lewis Softball Field.
