Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team's 14-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt on Thursday (Apr. 21) afternoon, as the No. 18 Flyers were swept by No. 21 Indianapolis, 9-0 (6 inn.) and 11-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader action at the Lewis Softball Field.
Indianapolis torched the Lewis pitching staff on Thursday, as catcher Cori Eckerle, pitcher/center fielder Jennifer DeMotte and second baseman Jamie Keltz each collected a pair of homers on the afternoon. Eckerle, DeMotte and right fielder Jessica Breeden batted a combined .571 (12-for-21) with four home runs, 10 RBI and nine runs scored.
"We just didn't play well today," Lewis head softball coach
George DiMatteo said. "We failed in all facets of the game. I thought Indianapolis played exceptionally well and we didn't show up.
"We'll find a way to bounce back from this."
With the sweep, Indianapolis improves to 29-10-1 and 12-6 in conference play, while the Flyers are now 28-9 on the season and 17-3 in GLVC action.
While DeMotte was solid at the dish for the Greyhounds, she was equally as dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout in the opener to improve her record to 17-4 on the season.
Lewis starting pitcher
Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) was tagged with her first loss in her last 12 appearances for the Flyers. Pickrum (13-2) allowed six runs, four earned, and nine hits while striking out seven batters.
The long ball proved to be the difference in the nightcap, as UIndy took Lewis starter
Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) deep four times. Eckerle had both of her homers in game two, while DeMotte and Keltz added blasts.
Habel (10-3) surrendered 11 runs and 12 hits in seven innings of work, while striking out five batters. UIndy starting pitcher Lauren Edwards (7-4) earned the complete-game win for the Greyhounds, as she allowed two runs and five hits.
Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 27), as the Flyers welcome St. Xavier for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field.
