Karissa Habel tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday.
Romeoville, Ill. – If they don't score, they can't win.
The Lewis University softball team, led by starting pitchers Diana Pickrum(Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and Karissa Habel(Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), earned a pair of 1-0 victories over Saint Joseph's in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field on Wednesday (Apr. 6) afternoon.
Pickrum and Habel combined to allow a meager eight hits and struck out a total of five batters.
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 18-7 overall and 7-1 in GLVC action, while the Pumas are now 12-15 on the campaign and 5-9 in conference play.
In game one, Lewis scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as senior first baseman Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) was hit by a pitch with one out.
Lewis freshman designated player Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) roped a single up the middle that skipped past Saint Joseph's center fielder Kristin Paris, allowing Flyer pinch runner Alicia McKendry (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) to score from first base for the winning run.
Pickrum earned the complete-game shutout victory – her fourth of the season - to improve her record to 8-1 on the season. She struck out one batter and allowed five hits on the afternoon.
In the nightcap, the Flyers used a little two-out magic, as junior third baseman Traci Freitag(Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) reached base in the fifth inning on a bunt single. Freitag moved into scoring position with a stolen base and scored the lone run of the game on a RBI single by sophomore center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West).
Habel went the distance for her third shutout of the season, allowing three hits and striking out four batters to improve to 6-2 on the campaign.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 9), as the Flyers head to Missouri to square off with Missouri-St. Louis for a 12 p.m. (CST) doubleheader.
