Clermont, Fla. - The Lewis University softball team was firing on all cylinders to open the 2013 campaign, as the Flyers outscored their opponents 17-0 and allowed just five hits in a pair of five-inning victories over both Georgian Court (8-0) and Felician (9-0) at the National Training Center on Monday (March 4).
"When you have great pitching, flawless defense and clutch hitting, good things are bound to happen," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said.
Lewis senior center fielder
Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) led the charge for the Flyers, as she batted a combined 4-for-5 with five runs scored, two RBI and led off the opener against Georgian Court with an inside-the-park home run. Flyer senior catcher
Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) and junior third baseman
Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) each pitched in three hits and a pair of RBI in the victories.
With the victories, Lewis improves to 2-0, while Georgian Court is now 0-3 and Felician falls to 2-7.
Against Georgian Court, Hefler opened up the contest with an inside-the-park home run, the first round-tripper of her career, and went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
The Flyers also received two-run doubles from sophomore designated player
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) and Munaco. Rourke went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, while senior shortstop
Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) had a RBI single and scored two runs for the Flyers.
Lewis sophomore hurler
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) tossed the complete-game, one-hitter to earn her first victory of the season. Bowler (1-0) faced 15 batters and struck out six, while walking two.
Georgian Court starting pitcher Senna Francesconi (0-1) took the loss for the Lions, as she surrendered seven earned runs and seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Lewis made short work of Felician in the nightcap, as the Flyers plated seven runs in the top of the second inning, thanks in part to two Golden Falcon errors. During the frame, Lewis received RBI from sophomore second baseman
Frankie Rys (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist), senior right fielder
Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris), Hefler and Rourke.
Hefler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Munaco was 2-for-2.
Lewis sophomore pitcher
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) picked up where Bowler left off in the opener, as she grabbed the complete-game, four-hit win. Brems (1-0) struck out four batters and allowed one walk in the victory. Felician pitcher Tori Bradburn (1-2) allowed five earned runs and 11 hits in five innings of work in the loss.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 5) morning, as the Flyers meet both Grand Valley State (9 AM (ET)) and Wayne State (NE) (11 AM (ET)).
