Quincy, Ill. - Lewis University freshman pitcher
Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) helped salvage a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader split with Quincy on Monday (March 17), as she tossed a complete-game, three-hitter to help the Flyers to a 5-2 win in the nightcap, after an 11-1 (6 inn.) loss in the opener at the Mart Heinen Complex.
Schweickert (2-2) allowed two runs and three hits, while fanning five Quincy batters in seven innings of work.
"Lainie (Schweickert) kept the ball down and away from Quincy's big hitters," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "She had great command of her pitches for the entire game."
With the split, Lewis is now 5-10 on the campaign and 1-3 in conference play, while the host Hawks move to 12-12 overall and 4-4 in GLVC action.
Schweickert was put at ease by a Flyer offense that spotted her four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Four different players recorded RBI in the frame, including junior first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North), senior third baseman
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean), senior
Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore catcher
Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East).
"It was a great start by us to score early," DiMatteo said. "It may have relaxed our team to jump to an early lead.
"It feels good to finally win a game, but we have a long way to go."
Moseley (2-for-3, RBI, run) and Ullrich (1-for-3, 2 RBI, run) combined for three hits and three RBI, while sophomore right fielder
Nicole Kappelman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and freshman shortstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) each had two hits in the win.
Schweickert's lone mistake came against her counterpart Rachel Scrum, as she went deep for a two-run homer in the fifth inning. In the circle, Scrum (3-3) allowed five runs, four earned, and nine hits in six innings.
The opening game was not as eventful for the Flyers, as the Hawks scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to clinch the contest. Four different QU players recorded at least two RBI with Morgan Fox (home run) and Kelsey Ley each driving home three.
Murphi Armstrong (8-6) earned the win for Quincy, as she allowed one run and seven hits in six innings. Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was tagged with the loss. Bowler (2-4) surrendered nine runs and five hits, while walking eight batters. Four of those base on balls came around to score.
Moseley was the lone offensive highlight for the Flyers, as she went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (March 19), as they head to Ohio to square off with Walsh for a 2 PM ET regional twinbill.
