Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University junior
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) helped the Flyer softball team avoid being swept by William Jewell on Friday (Apr. 11) afternoon, as the Kenosha, Wis., native tossed a complete-game shutout and scored the game's only run, in the 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over the Cardinals in the nightcap.
William Jewell scored three runs in the top of the eighth to win the opener, 5-2.
"A split is not what we wanted, and now we have to sweep (our opponents)" Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We need to score some runs and give our pitchers some much needed support."
With the split, Lewis is now 11-20 overall and 5-13 in GLVC action, while the visiting Cardinals are now 19-17 on the season and 12-10 in conference play.
Brems helped the Flyers break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of game two, as she roped a double to left center to open the inning. She would score the game's only run on a RBI single by freshman right fielder
Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook).
That's all the run support that Brems (2-2) would need, as she held William Jewell to three hits in seven innings of work, including getting out of a pair of bases-loaded jams. Her counterpart Faith Song (6-10) took the loss, as she allowed one run and five hits in six innings pitched.
Song, however, helped the Cardinals avoid a game one loss, as she hit a one-out homer in the top of the seventh off of Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) to tie the game up at 2-apiece.
The Cardinals rode that momentum into the eighth inning, as they recorded four 2-out hits and scored three runs to earn the victory.
Bowler (5-9) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs - four earned - and seven hits in eight innings pitched, while walking six batters and striking out four. WJC winning pitcher Rachel Hayden (11-6) allowed two runs and seven hits in eight innings.
Offensively, Lewis sophomore left fielder
Nicole Kappelman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) went 2-for-4 and scored a run to lead the Flyers.
The Flyers welcome Rockhurst to the Lewis Softball Field on Saturday (Apr. 12) for a 12 PM doubleheader.
