Romeoville, Ill. -
The Lewis University softball team showed it could play both small and long ball, as the host Flyers earned the 1-0, 10-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Rockhurst University at the Lewis Softball Field on Saturday (Apr. 12) afternoon.

The Flyers manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth inning in the opener, as senior third baseman Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) recorded a RBI double for the game's lone score. In the nightcap, junior designated player Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) and freshman second baseman Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) combined for two home runs and seven RBI in the victory.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 13-20 overall and 7-13 in conference action, while the visiting Hawks fall to 15-23 on the campaign and 10-14 in GLVC play.

In game one, Lewis sophomore left fielder Nicole Kappelman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and moved over to second on a sacrifice by Brems. Following a groundout by Flyer shortstop Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), Moseley (2-for-3, RBI) stepped to the dish for the game-winning hit.

Rockhurst threatened in the seventh, as pinch hitter Hannah Pyle opened the frame with a double and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) threw a pitch that sailed past Flyer catcher Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown). Teats, however, was able to recover and throw out Pyle at home as she attempted to score.

The Hawks were not done yet, as left fielder Demi Plathe notched a triple, but Bowler left her stranded at third, retiring center fielder Alex Hill on a ground out to end the game.

Bowler was the winning pitcher in both games for the Flyers to improve her record to 7-9 on the campaign. In the opener, Bowler earned the complete-game, four-hit shutout. She came on in relief in game two, allowing two runs - one earned - and three hits in four innings of work to earn the victory. Rockhurst starting pitcher Bridgette Sappington (12-13) took the loss, allowing one run and seven hits, while striking out three batters.

In the nightcap, Lewis scored in four out of six innings, highlighted by a five-run fifth that featured a three-run homer by Brems and a two-run shot by Nojiri - the first collegiate blast of her career. Brems was 1-for-3 with four RBI and scored two runs, while Nojiri was 3-for-3 with three RBI and scored two runs.

Lewis sophomore right fielder Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while freshman center fielder Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) also had two hits and scored two runs in game two.

Plathe (3-9) was the losing pitcher in game two, as she surrendered seven runs - five earned - and six hits in two innings of work.

Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 16), as the Flyers head to Kenosha, Wis., to square off with UW-Parkside for a 3 PM doubleheader.
