Somers, Wis. - The Lewis University softball team was not about to let a game-tying, two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning get them down, as the Flyers answered with a four-run seventh inning to claim the 7-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over UW-Parkside at the Case Softball Complex on Wednesday (Apr. 16) evening. Game two was suspended due to darkness with the contest tied at 1 in the top of the eighth inning.
"After tying up the game (in the sixth), I told my team, now we'll see our mettle," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "That message was heard loud and clear, and I really thought that we made a huge statement."
With the win, Lewis improves to 14-20 overall and 8-13 in GLVC action, while the host Rangers are now 2-23 on the season and 2-17 in conference play. Game two will resume at 1 PM on Tuesday (Apr. 22) prior to the originally scheduled doubleheader between Lewis and UW-Parkside in Romeoville.
In the opener, Lewis pitcher
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) was staked with a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning, following RBI singles from sophomores
Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown),
Nicole Kappelman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and
Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East). Brems was cruising until UWP left fielder Samantha Magruder took her deep with a three-run blast to even the score up at 3-apiece in the sixth.
That did not phase the Flyers, as they put runners at second and third with no one out. Teats broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to push Lewis ahead, 4-3. Following a groundout, Lewis freshman second baseman
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) plated senior third baseman
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) with a RBI infield single to extend the Flyer advantage to 5-3. Ranger starting pitcher Carly Dundee (2-11) issued a walk to Lewis pinch hitter
Chase Machain (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) putting runners at first and second with two outs for Russell. Russell cleared the bases with a two-run triple lto put the game out of reach for the Rangers.
Lewis reliever
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) earned her third victory in her last three appearances, as she held UWP hitless in 1.1 innings of work. Bowler is now 8-9 on the season. Dundee was done in by four Ranger errors, as all seven Flyer runs were unearned.
UW-Parkside jumped ahead of the Flyers in game two, as Alexis Simone belted a two-out homer off of Bowler in the second inning to put the Rangers in front, 1-0. The score would remain that way until the fifth inning when Lewis freshman center fielder
Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) drove in Nojiri with a RBI single to even the game up at 1-apiece.
Lewis continues its road trip to Rolla, Mo., as the Flyers meet Missouri S&T on Friday (Apr. 18) for a 12 PM doubleheader.
