Rolla, Mo. -
After dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Missouri S&T in the opening game, Lewis University junior pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) righted the ship with a masterful complete-game shutout in the nightcap to lift the Flyers to the 5-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the host Miners at the S&T Softball Field on Friday (Apr. 18) afternoon.

Bowler (9-9) allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters to win her fourth-straight game in as many appearances, excluding the suspended UW-Parkside contest. Over her last four contests, Bowler has allowed 10 hits in 19.1 innings of work with 11 strikeouts and an earned run average of 0.36.

"Kelly is pitching lately like the All-GLVC performer of a year ago," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said.

With the split, Lewis is now 15-21 overall and 9-14 in GLVC action, while the host Miners are 11-28 on the campaign and 6-20 in conference play.

Aiding Bowler's cause in game two was junior designated player Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside). Brems went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Flyers offensively, while the top of Lewis' line-up went 4-for-7 with a RBI. Sophomore right fielder Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) was 2-for-4 with a RBI while sophomore left fielder Nicole Kappelman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) also collected a pair of hits in the win. Eight different Flyers recorded at least one base hit in game two

Missouri S&T starting pitcher Bethany Rader (1-9) allowed three runs and seven hits to earn the loss for the Miners.

In the opening game, Missouri S&T used a three-run third inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Flyers. The Miners tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI double by catcher Cailey Baker to extend their advantage to 4-1.

The Flyers rallied in the sixth inning, as the first three batters reached base, highlighted by a Brems RBI single to bring Lewis to within two at 4-2. Lewis had runners at second and third with no out, as Missouri S&T brought in relief pitcher Amber Duncan.

Duncan struck out sophomore catcher Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown) and induced starting pitcher Chase Machain (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) into a RBI groundout to cut S&T's lead to 4-3. Duncan, however, retired freshman center fielder Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) to end the Flyer threat.

Machain (1-7) took the loss for the Flyers, surrendering four runs and nine hits in six innings of work, while striking out three. Missouri S&T starting pitcher Becca Strope (6-10) picked up the victory, allowing three runs - two earned - and five hits in five innings of work. Duncan tossed two innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.

"Two really fine games played by our team today," DiMatteo said. "Our rally fell short in game one, but in game two, clutch RBI from Brems and Bowler's three-hitter was the difference."

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 19), as the Flyers head to Springfield, Mo., to square off with Drury for an 11 AM doubleheader.
