Springfield, Mo. - Lewis University All-Great Lakes Valley Conference pitchers
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) and
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) showed why they earned that distinction in 2013, as the junior duo combined to hold Drury to one run and 11 hits in the 3-1, 7-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep over the Panthers at Thompson Field on Saturday (Apr. 19) afternoon.
Brems (3-2) twirled a complete-game, three hitter while fanning four to earn the victory in game one, while Bowler (10-9) won her fifth-straight decision. Bowler earned the complete-game, eight-hit shutout win in the nightcap, tying a season-high with nine strikeouts.
"Brems and Bowler were magnificent today," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "They were consistently ahead of hitters all day.
"This gives us a lot of momentum, because we have a huge week ahead of us as we try to climb back into the GLVC playoffs. "
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 17-21 overall and 11-14 in GLVC action, while the host Panthers fall to 13-33 on the campaign and 10-18 in conference play.
Brems, who retired the first 11 batters that she faced in the opener, aided her own cause with a solo home run in the first inning. Drury starting pitcher Jessica Kjeldgaard (10-16) took the loss for the Panthers, surrendering three earned runs and seven hits, while fanning three.
With the Flyers leading 1-0 in the fourth, they added to their advanatge on a RBI fielders choice by senior third baseman
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) to extend their lead to 2-0. Drury cut Lewis' lead in half in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Betsey Toalson, but Lewis junior pinch hitter
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) helped put away the game for the Flyers with a RBI single in the seventh inning.
Flyer freshman center fielder
Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) went 2-for-3 and scored a run to lead Lewis offensively in the opener.
In the nightcap, Lewis broke the game wide open with three runs in the fifth inning to give the Flyers a 5-0 lead. Lewis received RBI singles from freshman second baseman
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Brems; and a RBI squeeze bunt by sophomore left fielder
Nicole Kappelman (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).
Knaak went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run, while Nojiri was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI in game two. Six different Flyers recorded at least one RBI.
Drury starting pitcher Kailey Howard (2-12) took the loss for the Panthers, as she gave up five runs - three earned - and six hits in 4.2 innings of action.
The Flyers return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 22) at 1 PM, as they complete Wednesday's suspended doubleheader against UW-Parkside, before their previously scheduled twinbill at 3 PM at the Lewis Softball Field.
