Evansville, Ind. -
The Lewis University softball team had its chance to beat its third nationally-ranked team of the season, but No. 16 Southern Indiana was up to the task, as the host Screaming Eagles collected the 7-2, 4-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over the Flyers at the USI Softball Field on Sunday (April 12) afternoon.

Lewis was unable to come up with the big hit on Sunday, as the Flyers batted .067 (1-for-15) with runners in scoring position for the twinbill.

"It's disappointing that we had an opportunity to play a nationally-ranked team and come out as flat as we did today," Lewis head softball coach Becky Pearl said. "If we want to play in May, we need to get our act together quickly."

With the sweep, USI improves to 29-5 overall and 16-4 in conference play, while the visiting Flyers fall to 19-16 on the campaign and 10-10 in GLVC action.

In the opener, USI broke open a 1-all tie in the bottom of the third inning with six runs off of Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport). USI starting pitcher Brooke Harmening and second baseman MacKenzi Dorsam each connected for two-run singles in the frame.

Bowler (12-9) allowed seven runs - five earned - and eight hits in six innings of work, while striking out three batters. Harmening (17-1) surrendered two runs, fanned four batters and scattered eight hits for the complete-game victory.

Lewis freshman left fielder Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and senior first baseman Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) each collected a pair of hits for the Flyers, while junior second baseman Frankie Castagna (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) roped her first career home run in the seventh inning.

Harmening and Dorsam were the offensive catalysts in the nightcap for the Screaming Eagles as well. Dorsam had a RBI triple in the second inning, while Harmening hit a solo home run off of Lewis starting pitcher Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) in the third. Schweickert also surrendered a two-run shot to USI catcher Haley Hodges in the first inning.

Schweickert (7-7) allowed four runs and six hits, while striking out three batters. USI starting pitcher Sarah Owens (9-3) earned the complete-game win for the Screaming Eagles, allowing just one and four hits, while fanning two.

Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (April 15), as the Flyers head to Chicago for a 3 PM doubleheader against Saint Xavier.
