Romeoville, Ill. - Despite dropping a 3-0 decision to McKendree University in the opening game of their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader, the Lewis University softball team rapped out two home runs and nine hits in the nightcap en route to the 7-4 win over the Bearcats at the Lewis Softball Field on Friday (April 3) afternoon.
"I'm starting to feel like a broken record, because we're wide awake for one game and asleep for the other," Lewis head softball coach
Becky Pearl said. "I'm proud of our team for turning it around and not letting the first game get us down."
With the split, Lewis is now 17-12 on the campaign and 8-6 in GLVC action, while the visiting Bearcats move to 12-20 on the season and 4-12 in conference play.
In the opener, McK starting pitcher Kelsie Stoszkus held the Flyer bats in check, limiting them to four hits in her complete-game shutout victory. Stoszkus struck out four Flyer batters.
Lewis starting pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) took the loss for the Flyers. Bowler (12-6) surrendered three runs - one earned - and six hits, while fanning eight Bearcats.
The Flyer bats, however, responded in the second game, as they jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead following a three-run homer by senior first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North). Ullrich went 2-for-3 with four RBI and scored a run in the win. Lewis freshman left fielder
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) added to the Flyer fireworks with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Prieto's classmate
Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) contributed to the Flyer offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Lewis starting pitcher
Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) picked up her third-straight win for the Flyers in the circle. Schweickert (5-6) scattered four runs and seven hits, while striking out three Bearcats. Her counterpart Brooke Gajewski (4-6) gave up five runs - three earned - and seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (April 4), as the Flyers host UIS for a 12 PM twinbill at the Lewis Softball Field.
