ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's and women's track and field teams opened its 2019-20 indoor season at two separate meets this weekend at the GVSU Holiday Open and the St. Ambrose Frigid Bee Invitational. The Flyers recorded three provisional qualifying marks and the women's 4x400 meter relay team set a new school record at the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday.
GVSU Holiday Open
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of
Heather Batterham (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame),
Joelle Ataessien (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young HS),
Allison Heinzer (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland HS) and
Teresa Zaragueta (Spain/) finished second in the event with a time of 3:48.89 which broke the school record of 3:49.6 which was set back in 1997. The time is also good for a Division II national meet qualifying mark and is the fastest time in the country this season.
Ataessien finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.87 seconds and Heinzer took sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.10 seconds.
On the men's side,
John Partee (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) finished fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.60 which is a provisional qualifying mark.
Connor Wagner (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) finished fifth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.39 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team of
Jibreel Brown (Orland Hills, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS), Dominique Wood,
Will DeBolt (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Partee finished fifth with a time of 3:22.19 while the team of Wagner,
Connor Swanson (Newark, Ill./Newark),
Dan Ford (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) and
Chaz Sales (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) took sixth with a time of 3:23.65.
St. Ambrose Frigid Bee Invitational
Partee competed again in the 800 meter run winning the event with a time of 1:52.75 but was converted to 1:51.16 because of track size. His time is currently second fastest in the nation.
Nick Krella (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) took the top spot in pole vault clearing a height of 4.10 meters (13'5.25").
Brandon Clincy (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) took third in the high jump clearing a height of 1.96 meters (6'5").
Wyatt Wolfersberger (Saint Joseph, Ill./St. Joe Ogden) finished fourth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:47.52. Zach Olenek won the triple jump with a leap of 13.66 meters (44'9.75") and took fifth in the long jump with a jump of 6.53 meters (21'5.25").
Keegan Zack (Watseka, Ill./Watseka Community) took third in the triple jump with a jump of 13.15 meters (43'1.75").
Fargo Thornton (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) was third in the shot put with a heave of 14.68 meters (48'2") and fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 14.37 meters (47'1.75").
Michael Lyons (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central HS) finished second in the heptathlon with a total of 4,352 points.
For the women,
Sylvia Kozielski (Burbank, Ill./Reavis HS) finished second in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.10 seconds.
Rachael Ramon (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was second in the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.67 seconds.
Vanessa Peinado (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) won the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:21.25.
Jozlyn Garcia (Sterling, Ill./Sterling HS) was the runner-up in the high jump clearing a height of 1.50 meters (4'11").
Katelyn Gall (Channahon, Ill./Minooks) took fourth in the pole vault clearing a height of 3.09 meters (10'1.5"). The Flyers had four of the top six finishers in the long jump.
Anna Laudizio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) won the event with a leap of 5.63 meters (18'5.75"), Ramon was second with a jump of 5.61 meters (18'5"),
Jena Martin (Smithville, Mo./Smithville) was fifth with a leap of 5.40 meters (17.8.75") and
Alecea Cardillo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) took sixth with a jump of 5.26 meters (17'3.25"). Laudizio picked up a qualifying mark in the triple jump with her third place finish. Her best jump came in her fourth attempt jumping 11.95 meters (39'2.5").
Kylie Wymer (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) won the shot put with a heave of 13.05 meters (42'9.75") and finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 15.34 meters (50'4").
Abbey Galusha (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville, HS) took second in the pentathlon with 2,892 points.
Lewis wraps up its first semester schedule next Saturday at the University of Iowa Invite in Iowa City, Iowa.
