ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles announced on Tuesday (August 11) the addition of 21 players to the Flyers roster. Carter Appleton, Zach Bauer, Nathaniel Campbell, Jimmy Contreras, Justin Darlage, Kyle Downar-Clark, AJ Gilliam, Cristian Granados, Matthew Kelne, Adam Krupa, Kevin Martinez, Idehen Marvelous, Will Maurice, Luke Mcleese, Jacob Moore, Osman Rivas, Cesar Ruezga, Ibrahim Sakibu, Gio Sigala, Tony Vazquez and Jasper Waddington.
"I'm excited for the group to come in, there will be great competition daily to get time on the field, I believe this will make us stronger in the end," Fiffles said. "During these difficult times hopefully everyone can get on campus, start working hard and stay healthy, so we can be one of the top teams in one of the best leagues in the nation."
Appleton, a 5-11, midfielder/defender, from New Lenox, Ill., earned four letters at Providence Catholic High School. He was a part of 46 wins and three regional championships during his prep career. In 2019, he scored 14 goals and added 11 assists. Appleton earned All-Conference honors, was named to the New Lenox Patriot Team 22, South Suburban First Team and earned All-State honorable mention honors. He played club soccer with Chicago Rush South.
Bauer, a 6-2, goalkeeper, from Colona, Ill., was a three-year starter at goalkeeper at Geneseo High School. He earned First Team Quad Cities All-Metro honors and First Team All-Conference honors in 2018. Last season, he helped lead his team to a 14-6-1 record and a regional championship while earning First Team Quad Cities All-Metro honors and First Team All-Conference Western Big Six. Bauer played club soccer for Nido Aguila Quad Cities.
Campbell, a 5-10, defender, from Palm Bay, Fla., transfers to Lewis after two years at Eastern Florida State College. He appeared in 18 games in 2019 with four starts in helping lead the Titans to a 16-2-2 record and a runner-up finish in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Division I tournament. Campbell was a four-year letterwinner at Heritage High School where he was a three-time First Team All-Cape Coast Conference selection and three-time Defensive Most Valuable Player. He was part of 58 wins during his high school career and scored four goals and added 34 assists in his prep career. He played club soccer for Space Coast United.
Contreras, a 6-5, goalkeeper, from St. John, Ind., played at Lake Central High School. He played club soccer for Three Lions United, FC Revolution and Atletico FC.
Darlage, a 5-10, defender, from New Lenox, Ill., earned two varsity letters at Lincoln-Way West High School. As a junior, he started all 16 games scoring two goals and added 12 assists. Last season, he started all 25 games finishing with six goals and five assists. Darlage was named to the Chicagoland Soccer All-State team, IHSA All-Sectional team, Chicago Tribune All-Area Second Team and 22nd Century Media All-Area First Team. He led the Patriots to a 14-11 record in 2019 and a regional and sectional championship. Darlage played club soccer for Chicago Magic (2009-16), FC United (2016-2018) and Sockers FC (2018-2020).
Downar-Clark, a 5-7, defender, from Lansing, Ill., played at Thornton Fractional South. He earned All-Conference honors as a sophomore and served as a team captain for two years. He was part of three conference championship teams. Downar-Clark played club soccer for Harvey Dragons.
Gilliam, a 5-10, defender, from Manteno, Ill., played four years at Manteno High School where he scored 52 goals and added 21 assists in his high school career. He scored 25 goals and added three assists as a junior and had 11 goals and 11 assists in his senior season. Gilliam was a four-time Interstate 8 First Team All-Conference selection, a two-time Daily Journal All-Area, IHSSCA All-Sectional team and All-State selection. He helped lead his team to 68 wins, two regional championships, two conference championships and a sectional championship.
Granados, a 6-1, defender, from Chicago, Ill., was a three-sport athlete at De La Salle Institute where he earned six letters. He was a three-year letterwinner in soccer, earned two letters in baseball and one in football. He earned First Team All-Conference and was a Honorable Mention All-Sectional selection in his senior year.
Kelne, a 5-6, defender, from Olathe, Kan., was a two-year starter at Olathe East High School. He scored eight goals and added 12 assists during his high school career. Kelne was a member of four regional championship teams, two Sunflower League championship teams, a state runner-up finish in 2016 and a state championship winning team in 2018. He was named to the All-Sunflower League team in 2019. Kelne played club soccer for Legends KC.
Krupa, a 5-11, defender, from Darien, Ill., played at Hinsdale South High School. He scored nine goals and added four assists in his prep career. He was named to the WSC All-Conference team in 2018 and 2019 and was named to the IHSSCA All-State team in 2019. Krupa played club soccer for Chicago Inter (2016-18) and Oak Brook Soccer Club (2019-20).
Martinez, a 5-8, midfielder, from Carpentersville, Ill., played four four years Dundee Crown High School. He was part of back-to-back regional championship winning teams in 2018 and 2019. Martinez started all 25 games in 2019 scoring 11 goals and was named to the Fox Valley All-Conference team. He played club soccer for Chicago Inferno.
Marvelous, a 6-1, defender, from Benin City, Edo State in southern Nigeria, played at King's Onward College.
Maurice, a 6-3, goalkeeper, from Minooka, Ill., earned two varsity letters at Minooka High School. He posted 30 clean sheets in his high school career. Maurice was a member of Minooka's 2018 team 3A Regional Championship team. He was a four-time Southwest Prairie Conference Scholar-Athlete. Maurice played club soccer for Three Rivers Soccer Club (2011-12), Team Olympic (2013-19) and Chicago Rush South (2019-20).
Mcleese, a 5-10, defender, from Lombard, Ill., played at Glenbard East High School. He helped lead his team to 28 wins during his high school career and earned All-Conference and All-Sectional honors in 2019. He played club soccer for Glen Ellyn Lakers for three years and Synergy Soccer Club for four years.
Moore, a 5-9, midfielder, from Kailua, Hawaii, played at Punahou High School in Honolulu. He earned second team All-State and All-Conference honors in 2017, earned First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State honors in 2018 and First Team All-Conference and All-State honors in 2019 and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Hawaii state tournament.
Rivas, a 5-7, midfielder, from Culpeper, Va., was a two-sport athlete at Eastern View High School where he competed in cross country and soccer. He plans to major in aviation at Lewis.
Ruezga, a 5-9, midfielder, from Romeoville, Ill., graduated from Romeoville High School. He played two seasons at Walther Christian Academy. Ruezga led the team in assists as a freshman and was named the team MVP during his sophomore season. He played club soccer for Cadence SFC.
Sakibu, a 5-9, midfielder, from Newtown, Ghana, graduated from Asamankese Senior High School where he was captain of his team. He played club soccer for Accra Newtown United (2017-20). Sakibu led the team in assists in the 2018-19 season.
Sigala, a 5-8, midfielder, from Joliet, Ill., played at Joliet Central.
Vazquez, a 5-10, defender, from McHenry, Ill., played at McHenry Community High School where he was a three-sport athlete. He earned four letters in soccer, two in track and field and one in football. Vazquez scored four goals and added eight assists in his senior season. He played club soccer for Eclipse Select for four years and Chicago Alliance FC for three years.
Waddington, a 6-0, midfielder, from Crete, Ill., played at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights. He was named to the ESCC All-Conference team and IHSSCA All-Sectional team as a senior. Waddington scored 26 goals and added 18 assists in his final two years of high school. He played club soccer for Galaxy SC (2018-20).
