ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team was picked to finish sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Preseason Coaches Poll released by the conference office on Friday (Feb. 4).
The Flyers received 18 points in the poll behind Rockhurst and Missouri Western. Defending national champions Lindenwood edged out defending GLVC champion Indianapolis for the top spot in the poll with the Lions receiving 47 points and five first place votes while the Greyhounds picked up 45 points and the final three first place votes. McKendree slid in at third with 36 points.
Lewis, under the direction of first year head coach
Molly Byrne, went 4-8 and was 2-5 in GLVC play last season. The Flyers return six of their top seven scorers from a season ago including
Lindsey Traub (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard High School) who tallied 21 points with 16 goals and five assists.
Emily Meredith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and
Skylar Lucich (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) had 14 goals apiece for Lewis.
Brigid Fornek (Lawrenceville, Ga./Grayson) started all 12 games between the pipes last season going 4-7 while making 92 saves and
Faith Engle (Marysville, OH/Marysville High School) appeared in six contests going 0-1 with 14 saves.
The 2022 season will feature a six-game single round-robin schedule, beginning April 2, while the non-conference slate commences Wednesday, Feb. 9. The 2022 GLVC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament will be hosted on campus by the No. 1 seed from April 29-May 1. The top four teams in the final standings will advance to the conference tournament.
The Flyers open their season on Friday (Feb. 25) at Concordia (Mich.) at 2 p.m. (CST). There home opener will take place the following week hosting Ashland at 12 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
