BOLIVAR, Mo. – The dynasty continues as Lewis University's women's track and field team won its sixth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 196.50 points on Friday and Saturday afternoon at Plaster Stadium in Bolivar, Mo. The Flyers swept the indoor and outdoor championships this season.
Natasha Bernett (McAlpin, Ill./Lane Tech) was named the GLVC's Women's Track Athlete of the Year and head coach
Dana Schwarting was named the GLVC's Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Lewis picked up 21 points in the triple jump led by
Jaden Christian's (Braidwood, Ill./Braidwood (Reed-Custer)) winning performance of 11.70 meters (38'4.75").
Alecea Cardillo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) came in third with a jump of 11.54 meters (37'10.5"),
Tori Hagg (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community HS) took seventh with a leap of 10.98 meters (36'0.25") and
Jena Martin (Smithville, Mo./Smithville) finished seventh with a jump of 10.95 meters (35'11.25").
The Flyers scored 18 points in the javelin with
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) and Bernett finishing 1-2 in the event. Poppen won it with a heave of 43.27 meters (141'11") while Bernett had a toss of 43.09 meters (141'4").
Lewis added to its point total with 11 points in the shot put.
Ratkoslava Karac (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) took third with a heave of 13.58 meters (44'6.75") while
Kylie Wymer (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) finished fourth with a toss of 12.93 meters (42'5.25").
Nadia Roberts (Burbank, Ill./Burbank (Reavis)) finished in a tie for fifth with Missouri S&T's Annmarie Tyson clearing the bar at a height of 1.57 meters (5'1.75").
Aliza Van Den Elzen (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) was the runner-up in the heptathlon with 4,516 points.
The Flyer 4x100 relay team of
Jada Hoffman (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy),
Rose-Marie Ogbuli (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East), Bernett and
Alexandra Martinez (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfeild Central) posted the winning time of 46.77 seconds.
Lewis' 4x400 relay team of
Essence Winters (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East),
Vivica Phillips (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South HS),
Allison Mack (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park HS) and
Kyla Chalmers (Elk Grove Village, Ill./James B. Conant) came in fifth at 3:59.49.
Bernett picked up an event win the 100 hurdles with her winning time of 13.94 seconds while Mack was fifth at 15.01 seconds edging out UIndy's Lindsey Wormuth. Bernett, Winters and Mack were second, seventh and eighth in the 400 hurdles with times of 1:01.67, 1:08.98 and 1:09.12 respectively.
Hoffman was the runner-up in the 100 meters while Ogbuli came in eighth. Hoffman hit the line at 11.71 seconds and was edged out by Southwest Baptist's Britney Clark by .01 seconds. Ogbuli finished at 12.11 seconds.
Hoffman and Ogbuli came back later in the afternoon to finish first and third in the 200 meters. Hoffman won it in a time of 24.37 seconds while Ogbuli wasn't far behind at 24.57 seconds.
Chalmers and Phillips were fourth and sixth in the 400 meters with times of 57.80 and 58.83 seconds respectively.
Kassady Learn (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and
Naylah Allen (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East HS) were sixth and eighth in the 5,000 meters with times of 18.28.27 and 18:49.43 respectively.
Dayanna Sanchez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) was the team's nominee for the GLVC's James R. Spalding Sportsmanship award.
Lewis returns to the track next Saturday as they travel down the road to Joliet to compete in the St. Francis Last Chance Meet at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
