ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis baseball dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with William Jewell on Saturday (March 21) at Brennan Field by scores of 4-2 and 7-1 in Lewis' 2015 home opener.

Game One: William Jewell 4, Lewis 2
The Cardinals struck first with a two-run home run by Jared Patton in the second inning. William Jewell scored two more in the sixth to go up 4-0.

Lewis put the first two runners on base in the eighth but a double play helped limit the Lewis damage to just one run. In the ninth, it was a 4-2 game when junior Chris Pikoulas (Frankfort, Ill./Carl Sandburg) entered the game as a pinch hitter. The Flyers had the tying runs on base with two outs, however Pikoulas flied out to end the game.

"They got on us early in game one and after they got a lead we never really answered back," Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. "We made it interesting late but credit their pitcher for closing the deal."

William Jewell starter Austin Kretchmar went all nine to move his record to 5-0. He gave up two runs on six hits. Lewis starter senior Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) allowed four runs in 5.2 innings. His record is now 0-3.

Junior Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and freshman Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) each had an RBI in game one for the Flyers.

Game Two: William Jewell 7, Lewis 1
The nightcap slipped away from the Flyers in the second inning when the Cardinals scored five runs (four unearned) off Lewis starter Eann Cox (Erie, Ill./Erie).

Cardinals starting pitcher Nick Farleigh went all seven innings. His record is now 2-1 after the complete game victory. Cox took the loss, allowing only the five runs in the second inning over 6.0 innings pitched.

The Flyers never held a lead in either game.

"We didn't hit today," McDonough said. "It's something we've done up until now and we didn't today."

Junior Kurt Becker (Palatine, Ill./Palatine)'s double in the sixth inning knocked in junior Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) for Lewis' only run of game two.

William Jewell moves to 12-3 (5-1 GLVC) while the Flyers fall to 6-8 (2-4 GLVC). The two clubs will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon at Brennan Field.
