While Arturo Cabral remains Lewis University's only four-time All-American in cross country, his success as a Flyer student athlete goes far above and beyond that remarkable accomplishment.
In 2002 Cabral received the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top honor for a student athlete, the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award. Established and named in honor of GLVC Commissioner Emeritus Richard F. Scharf, the Paragon Award is presented annually to one male and one female GLVC student athlete in recognition of his/her academic excellence, athletic achievement, character and leadership. Also that year, Cabral was chosen GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's cross country and was one of just 58 student athletes from around the country to be awarded a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
Cabral placed 29th as a senior, 12th as a junior, 16th as a sophomore and 38th as a freshman at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship. He won the Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship title as a senior and also was all-region as a junior (second place), sophomore (third) and freshman (10th). Cabral earned All-GLVC honors each year as well, winning the conference crown as a junior, finishing third as a sophomore and senior and placing fifth as a freshman at the GLVC Championship. The Flyers won the conference title and finished 14th in the nation in Cabral's freshman campaign.
On the track, Cabral garnered All-America accolades by finishing eighth in the 5,000 meter at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championship and competed in the 5,000 at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championship and 2001 NCAA Indoor Championship. He was selected 2002 GLVC Athlete of the Year for indoor track after winning the 3,000 and 5,000 at the GLVC Championship and later that spring won GLVC outdoor titles in the 5,000 and 10,000.
In GLVC competition, Cabral won the indoor 3,000 three times, the indoor 5,000 twice, the outdoor 5,000 twice and the outdoor 10,000 once, and was a two-time runner-up in the 3,000 steeplechase.
A criminal/social justice major and computer science minor, Cabral was a four time Academic All-GLVC selection in both cross country and track, a Lewis Deans' List student all eight semesters and a four-time recipient of the University's Brother David Delahanty Award, presented to student athletes who excel in the classroom. He was also a four-year member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and Peer Ministry Team and a member of the Intervarsity Fellowship at Lewis
