Richard Wagner, wrestled his way to a 99-31-1 career record at Lewis University, including the most career pins ever for a Lewis grappler. He was the NAIA District 20 Champion in 1973, 1975 and 1976, being named All-American in 1976. As a freshman, he became the first Lewis wrestler to win a match at nationals and continued to improve throughout his collegiate career, being ranked No. 3 in the nation his senior year. Wagner, team captain for two years, was named team most valuable player his junior and senior years.
Wrestling isn't Wagner's only sport. While at Lewis, he was president of the Lewis Bowling League and since graduation he has taken up running, completing six marathons. A business administration major at Lewis, Wagner was employed by United Airlines for four years, from 1978-82. Wagner also dabbled in coaching for one season, guiding St. Laurence High School's Varsity wrestling team to an 8-10 record, following a 2-15 record the previous year.
