    Compiling a sixteen-year, 294-140 won-loss record as varsity coach at Leo High School(Chicago), Fitzgerald has established himself as one of the premier basketball coaches in the prestigious Chicago Catholic League, and the State of Illinois as well. His teams have captured four league, five regional, two sectional and 15 holiday tournament championships. His teams also have captured two gold medals in the summer Prairie State games.
    Calling Leo his professional home since his graudation from lewis in 1974, fitgerald began his coaching career as Frosh-Soph basketball coach, before taking over the varsity program in 1977. He has been named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) District 3 Coach of the Year six times and Chicago Catholic League Coach of the Year in 1986. A Leo alumnus, he was inducted into Leo High School Hall of Fame in 1990. He was names to the board of directors of the IBCA in 1990.
