Swenson, a member of the track and field team for three years, was one of the premier javelin throwers in the NAIA, recording one of the top 15 distances in the country in 1967, with a throw of 204'10". His record will stand forever in Lewis history, since the type of javelin thrown was modified in the 1980's due to the great distances that the athletes were throwing the older model. Mike captured first place honors in the javelin at the 1967 Midland Conference Championships while setting a stadium record in the javelin during the same championships.
Besides the javelin, Swenson also excelled in the discus, winning that event at sevel meets.
