Dan Shields competed in track and field and cross country from 1974-78. Shields was names All-District in cross country four years in a row and qualified for NAIA National Competition in each of those seasons. His teammates voted him most valuable runner in 1974 and 1975 and he served as team captain his senior year. That same year, the Lewis team earned All-American honors. Shields is considered one of the pioneers in helping to establish a long list of outstanding distance runners in Lewis' track history.
    Shields earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1978. He and his wife, LuAnn, were married in Sancta Alberta Chapel on the Lewis Campus.
