Wileen Gausman has distinguished herself as the single individual runner responsible for launching the Flyers Cross Country & Track & Field programs to national prominence.
Her list of accomplishments is staggering. She was voted the most valuable runner in both cross country and track all four years while at Lewis University. Gausman captured 1st place GLVC finishes in cross counrtry in 1990 and 1991, the first Lewis women ever to do so. She was named to the NCAA all region teams in both 1990 & 1992. Gausman still holds school records in five cross country/track events: the 1000 meter run (2.57.0), the 4 x 800 meter run (9.33.0), the distance medley (12.25.7), the 5000 meter run (17.94.6) and the 10,000 meter run (34.56.8).
She was named Illinois NCAA Woman of the Year in 1993. Gausman was named NCAA All American in six different events and in 1992 she also was named to the prestigious NCAA All American Academic team. She was named to the Dean's List of honor students all four years at Lewis University. She received the Social Work Departmental Award in 1992 and the Brother David Delehanty academic/athletic award in 1990, 1991 and 1992. Gausman holds degrees in social work and elementary education.
Gausman's running career did not end upon graduation. She became the youngest qualifier ever for the Olympic Marathon Trials with a time of 2.42.40. In 1995 she was named USA Track & Field Illinois Runner of the Year, Chicago Area Runners Association's Runner of the Year and Windy City Sports Magazine's Runner of the Year. in 1996 she finished 1st in the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle, the 20K Chicago Distance Classic, the 5K Chicago Distance Classic, the 25K National Corridor Classic and the Brickey 5 mile run in Dungarven, Ireland.
