    Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Lewis University since 1988, has spearheaded a $25 million construction and renovations program to enhance campus facilities. He championed plans for a Student Recreation and Fitness Center, assuring that the JFK Sports Center also would be renovated and Athletic Department facilities expanded. A longtime fan of Lewis athletics, Brother James attends many sports events and is a freind and mentor to Flyer student-athletes.
    A leading spokespersonf for private higher education, Brother James has chaired the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities for the past two years. He also is Chairman of the Board of the Housing Foundation of Will County.
    Active in education and community affairs, Brother James is a member of the Board of Directors of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, LaSalle University in Philadelphia, St. Patrick High School in Chicago, St. Joseph's Medical Center in Joliet, and the Canal Corridor Association. He serves on the Board of Directors of United Way of Will County where he served as a chairman of the 1991-92 United Way campaign which exceeded its goal.
    Brother James earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from St. Mary's College (now University) in Minnesota, a master's degree from Manhattan College in New York and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois.
