Lorenz manned the hot corner for the Flyer baseball team for three seasons (1977-79). In 1977 he helped guided the Flyers to a 50-19 record, the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and a fourth place finish in the NAIA World Series. He attracted considerable attention in his sophomore season batting .342 with 43 RBIs in 58 games. His flawless defense at the hot corner also caught the eye of professional scouts. He hit in the number two position as a sophomore and then in his junior season was moved to the number three spot after the graduation of All-American John Crockett.
During his senior season he hit .351 with nine doubles, four triples, three home runs and drove in 31 runs. His slugging percentage of .506 was second on the team as were his stolen base totals of 20. He helped lead the Flyers to a 35-18 record during his senior campaign and the program's 17th CCAC title and a bid to the NAIA National Tournament for the 19th straight season.
