Ray Coughlin earned eight letters in basketball and baseball from 1961-65. One of the few players ever to be voted the Most Valuable Player in both sports. Coughlin earned the MVP Award in basketball in 1964 and was voted the MVP Award in baseball in 1965. The 1964 and 1965 baseball teams participated in the National Tournament and finished third and fifth respectively. The 1965 basketball team was the first ever to participate in the National Tournament losing in the sectional round of play. Coughlin was offered a professional baseball contract by the Minnesota Twins, but opted for graduate school in 1965.
Ray received his M.A. in mathematics from Loyola in 1967, his PHD from I.I.T. in1969 and as present is a full professor of mathematics at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Coughlin has written four books on Calculus and is in the process of having his fifth book published.
