Mike Flaherty played basketball for the flyers from 1969-73. Recognized as an outstanding reserve, he was touted as a prolific scorer and enjoyed being on the court when the game was on the line. If an all time sixth man award were given, Mike would win it hands down. Mike had an uncanny knack for always being around the ball.
After completing his degree in political science, Mike began teaching and coaching basketball at St. Rita High School in Chicago. From there, he moved to Mendel Catholic High School, guiding the Rangers' basketball team to six regional titles, including a second place finish in the state tournament in 1982. For the past 10 years, Mike has excelled at Thornridge High School in Dolton. He guided the Falcons to four consecutive conference titles from 1988 to 1992, including an Elite Eight finish in the IHSA State Tournament in 1989.
